Helena Elshout

Helena Elshout is gefascineerd door de kracht van verhalen en de mechanismen achter macht en privilege.

Ze studeerde Taal- en Letterkunde Frans-Duits aan de universiteiten van Gent, Bamberg (DE) en Fribourg (CH). In haar doctoraat onderzocht ze de narratieve kracht van beeldspraak in Duitstalige kortverhalen. Ze schreef artikels over verteldynamieken in theaterteksten en op scène. Vanuit het Museum voor schone kunsten in Gent coördineerde ze een multidisciplinair Europees project rond collectieve en participatieve creatie.

Ze was voorzitter van Multatuliteater Gent en zit in het bestuur van de beweging voor kritisch burgerschap Labo vzw. Als regie-assistent, dramaturge en procesbegeleider werkte ze nauw samen met o.a. Marijke Pinoy, Peter Aers, Selma & Sofiane Ouissi en Rona Kennedy. Ze volgde de opleiding Participatief Drama bij Formaat in Rotterdam en de LUX regie cursus bij Wisper. Van jongsaf is ze gepassioneerd door theater en zette ze haar schouders onder tal van producties in alle mogelijke rollen: spel, productie, dramaturgie, coördinatie... Binnen het verhalenproject Migrating Dialogues werkt ze aan de performance ‘Bamama’ over het leven van haar oma in Congo. Voor haar gedurfde regiedebuut zet ze SMEER van Jan Arends op de planken bij Multatuliteater Gent: een wereldpremière.

Helena Elshout is fascinated by the power of stories and the mechanics behind power and privilege. She studied linguistics and literature in French and German at the universities of Ghent, Bamberg (DE) and Fribourg (CH). In her doctorate she researched the narrative power of metaphors in German short stories. She wrote articles about storytelling dynamics in theatre texts and on stage. From the Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent she coordinated a multidisciplinary project around collective and participatory creation.

She was chairwoman of the Multatuliteater in Ghent and is on the board of the movement for critical citizenship, Labo vzw. As a directing assistant, playwright and process supervisor, she worked closely with Marijke Pinoy, Peter Aers, Selma & Sofiane Ouissi and Rona Kennedy, among others. She took the Participatory Drama course at Formaat in Rotterdam and the LUX directing course at Wisper. Since childhood, she has been passionate about theatre and put her shoulders to the wheel in numerous productions in all possible roles: acting, production, dramaturgy, coordination... Within the storytelling project Migrating Dialogues, she is working on the performance 'Bamama' about her grandmother's life in Congo. For her bold directorial debut, she stages SMEER by Jan Arends at Multatuliteater Gent: a world premiere.
