De ceremoniële gamelancultuur uit Bali & Java, heruitgevonden als een hedendaags percussieritueel
Ensemble Nist-Nah is een hybride percussie-ensemble dat gongs, klankschalen, xylofoons, bellen, cimbalen, drums en andere instrumenten uit de Javaanse en Balinese gamelantraditie gebruikt om originele muziek te spelen, geïnspireerd door uiteenlopende Zuidoost-Aziatische muziek, maar ook door alles van free jazz tot hedendaagse hip-hop.
De gamelan, afkomstig uit Indonesië, maakt al meer dan een millennium deel uit van de cultuur van Java en Bali. Al in de 8e eeuw zijn het instrument en de bijbehorende praktijk afgebeeld op beeldhouwwerken en reliëfpanelen in de Borobudur-tempel, het grootste boeddhistische heiligdom ter wereld. Die traditie wordt tot op de dag van vandaag van generatie op generatie doorgegeven en klinkt bij ceremonies, rituelen, theatervoorstellingen, festivals en concerten.
Het ensemble werd in 2019 opgericht door Will Guthrie, een groot bewonderaar van gamelanmuziek. Geworteld in zijn studieverblijven in Indonesië brengen Guthrie en zijn ensemble stukken die schatplichtig zijn aan diverse traditionele muziek uit Zuidoost-Azië - van de majestueuze Indonesische Sekaten-ceremonie tot de duizelingwekkende herhaling bij het Jathilan-ritueel en de muziek van de Balinese componist Dewa Alit.
Toch is wat het ensemble maakt allesbehalve traditionele muziek. De invloeden zijn rijk en gevarieerd: van Roscoe Mitchells percussiewerken en Henry Threadgills meerstemmige improvisatiemuziek tot de cross-culturele avonturen van Trevor Watts, Michael Ranta en Mike Cooper.

Ensemble Nist-Nah is a hybrid percussion ensemble that uses gongs, singing bowls, xylophones, bells, cymbals, drums and other instruments from the Javanese and Balinese gamelan tradition, to perform original music inspired by a variety of Southeast Asian music, but also by everything from free jazz to contemporary hip-hop.
Originating in Indonesia, the gamelan has been part of the culture of the islands of Java and Bali for over a millennium. Dating back to the 8th century, sculptures and relief panels at the Borobudur Temple, the world’s largest Buddhist sanctuary already depict the instrument and the practice associated with it, which continues to be passed down from generation to generation and played at ceremonies, rituals, theater performances, festivals, and concerts.
The group was founded in 2019 by Will Guthrie, a great admirer of the gamelan music made with this orchestral instrument. Grounded in his study trips to Indonesia, Guthrie and his ensemble present pieces influenced by diverse traditional music from Southeast Asia – from the majestic Indonesian Sekaten ceremony, to the delirious repetition accompanying the Jathilan ritual, or the music of Balinese composer Dewa Alit.
However, what the group creates is anything but traditional music. The influences are rich and varied, drawing on account Roscoe Mitchell’s percussion works, Henry Threadgill’s multi-directional improvisatory music, as well as cross-cultural adventures from the likes of Trevor Watts, Michael Ranta and Mike Cooper.
