Will Guthrie

Ensemble Nist-Nah werd in 2019 opgericht als een hybride gamelan-percussie-ensemble onder leiding van de in Nantes gevestigde Australische drummer en percussionist Will Guthrie. De muziek van Ensemble Nist-Nah is geïnformeerd, beïnvloed en geïnspireerd door diverse traditionele muziekvormen uit Indonesië en gong-gebaseerde muziek uit Zuidoost-Azië, maar het ensemble wil zich bewust distantiëren van droog academisch discours of twijfelachtig exotisme. Klank en interactie staan voorop, en het ensemble heeft er vanaf het begin naar gestreefd muziek te maken die voortdurend evolueert, relevant en respectvol is, en zich aanpast aan de huidige leden en hun interesses. Ensemble Nist-Nah bouwt voort op Guthries jarenlange werk met toonhoogte-percussie en resonerende metalen, waarbij gongs, klankschalen en bellen worden ingezet als melodisch en harmonisch materiaal, naast polyritme en polymetrische mogelijkheden.

De gepresenteerde muziek is geworteld in Guthries reizen door Indonesië en zijn waardering voor diverse vormen van gamelanmuziek — van de statige, tijdloze sfeer van de Javaanse hoofse Gamelan Sekatan, over de duizelingwekkende, ruwe herhaling die het Javaanse tranceritueel Jathilan begeleidt, tot de flikkerende akoestische glitch van de hedendaagse Balinese componist Dewa Alit en zijn Gamelan Salukat. Hoewel Guthrie zijn palet verbreedt om gamelaninstrumentatie te verkennen en zijn liefde voor deze verfijnde maar elementaire percussiemuziek te eren, zijn de invloeden rijk en gevarieerd: van Roscoe Mitchells percussiewerken en Henry Threadgills meerstemmige improvisatiemuziek tot de cross-culturele avonturen van Trevor Watts, Michael Ranta en Mike Cooper.

Met acht muzikanten uit uiteenlopende achtergronden herbergt Nist-Nah een schat aan ervaring en expertise. Het ensemble verwelkomt regelmatig gasten zoals Jennifer Torrence, Sarah Hennies, Toma Gouband en Jessika Kenney. In 2024 beleefde de groep een tweede fase, met jongere, in Nantes gevestigde muzikanten en nieuwe muziek. Naast de artistieke werking organiseren verschillende leden van het ensemble regelmatig workshops en geven ze gamelanles — een manier om mensen samen te brengen, jong en oud, beginners en gevorderden. Ze hebben lesgegeven aan universiteiten, gevangenissen, kraakpanden, scholen en gemeenschapscentra.

Ensemble Nist-Nah was formed in 2019 as a hybrid Gamelan percussion ensemble, led by Nantes-based Australian drummer and percussionist Will Guthrie. The music of Ensemble Nist-Nah is informed, influenced and inspired by various traditional musics from Indonesia and gong based musics from Southeast Asia, however the music aims to distance itself from dry academic discourse or questionable exoticism. Rather, sonic and interactive issues are at the forefront, and the band since its inception, has aimed to produce music that is continually evolving, relevant, respectful and adapting to the current members and their current interests. Ensemble Nist-Nah develops out of Guthrie’s extensive work with pitched percussion and resonant metals over the years, using gongs, singing bowls and bells as melodic and harmonic material, alongside polyrhythmic and poly-metric rhythmic possibilities.

The music presented is grounded in Guthrie’s travels in Indonesia and appreciation of various forms of Gamelan music, from the stately suspended temporality of the courtly Javanese Gamelan Sekatan, to the delirious, thuggish repetition that accompanies the Javanese trance ritual Jathilan, to the shimmering acoustic glitch of contemporary Balinese composer Dewa Alit and his Gamelan Salukat. Though Guthrie is broadening his palette to explore Gamelan instrumentation and pay tribute to his love of this sophisticated yet elemental percussion music, the influences are rich and varied, taking into account Roscoe Mitchell’s percussion works, Henry Threadgill’s multi-directional improvisatory music, as well as cross cultural adventures from the likes of Trevor Watts, Michael Ranta and Mike Cooper.

Bringing together 8 musicians coming from eclectic and mixed backgrounds, Nist-Nah hosts a wealth of experience and expertise, and also regularly invites guests such as Jennifer Torrence, Sarah Hennies, Toma Gouband and Jessika Kenney. In 2024 the group entered into its second phase, bringing together younger Nantes based musicians, a new group and new music to go with it. In parallel to Nist-Nah’s artistic endeavours, various members of the group regularly organise workshops and teach Gamelan, using these incredible instruments and teaching possibilities, as a way to bring people together, old and young, beginner and advanced, and have taught in universities, prisons, squats, schools and community centres.
