Dansen verkennen van verschillende culturen en tijdperken
Swarmy Swarm is een choreografische voorstelling waarin een groot scala aan verschillende dansuitingen tegelijkertijd voorkomen. Het werk maakt gebruik van de vele technieken van de dansers en hun uiteenlopende dansachtergronden. Swarmy Swarm beweegt als een grote, zoemende wolk op de dijk naar het sportstrand, waarbij een voortdurend spel met ritme en syncopatie de drijvende kracht vormt.
De voorstelling is het resultaat van een workshop van 8 dagen bij P.A.R.T.S. en in totaal nemen 24 studenten deel.

Ingri Fiksdal begon voor Swarmy Swarm met een onderzoek naar de conceptuele grenzen van dans als vorm van kunst in Scandinavië. Ze onderzocht evenzeer strategieën voor potentiële danstoekomsten, gelijkwaardig en weg van de koloniale context die de term 'eigentijds' met zich meedraagt. 'Dans als kunst' wordt vaak gelijkgesteld aan het genre dat we hedendaagse kunst noemen. In plaats van alle dansvormen van nu aan te duiden, impliceert 'hedendaagse kunst' meestal een kader van specifieke geformaliseerde danstechnieken en choreografische modellen, met hun oorsprong in 20e-eeuwse moderne dans van West-Europa en Noord-Amerika. Hedendaagse kunst heeft als kunstvorm historisch gezien een hogere status, terwijl andere dansvormen vaak gecategoriseerd werden als traditioneel, cultureel, ritueel, sociaal, museaal, commercieel, folklorisch et cetera, zonder deze labels kritisch te bekijken.
Vandaag de dag bepaalt hedendaagse dans het hele veld in Scandinavië: de toegang tot formele dansopleidingen, kunstfinanciering en netwerken van verspreiding en distributie. Andere vormen van dans worden vaak geconfronteerd met een ontkenning van gelijkwaardigheid en worden daardoor grotendeels uitgesloten uit de kunstwereld. In de woorden van antropoloog Johannes Fabian betekent 'coëxistentie' de erkenning dat we allen hetzelfde tijdskader delen. Dit in tegenstelling tot het standpunt dat sommige culturen of culturele praktijken tot het verleden behoren, terwijl anderen hedendaags of 'in het nu' zijn. Swarmy Swarm poogt dit tegemoet te komen door de creatie van een nieuwe choreografische structuur, toegankelijk voor een grote verscheidenheid aan gelijkwaardige dansen.
De workshop zal worden begeleid door Ingri Fiksdal in samenwerking met dansers Mariama Fatou, Kalley Slåttøy en Jonathan Ibsen. Ze werkten eerder samen aan de voorstellingen Fictions of the Flesh (2021) en The Syncopators - deze laatste ook te zien tijdens DANSAND! 2023 - die beide coëxistentiële dans benaderden door de geschiedenis van de jazzdans en het persoonlijke bewegingsarchief van Slåttøy. Met Swarmy Swarm willen ze voortbouwen op deze eerdere projecten door te putten uit een veelheid van de diverse bewegingsarchieven van de deelnemers.

In Swarmy Swarm, a large variety of different dance expressions exist coevally within a choreographic structure. The work draws from the various embodied archives of the performers and their manyfold dance backgrounds. Swarmy Swarm travels through space - from the dyke to the beach - as a large, buzzing cloud where a constant play with rhythm and syncopation is the driving force.

The background of this performance is Ingri Fiksdal’s research into the conceptual boundaries of dance-as-art in the Nordics, as well as strategies towards coeval dancefutures away from contemporaneity as a colonial idea(l) of time. Dance-as-art is frequently equated with the genre referred to as contemporary dance, a highly contradictory term. Rather than denoting all dance forms of the present, it commonly implies a specific set of formalized dance techniques and choreographic formats derived from Western-European and North American modern dance of the 20th century. Contemporary dance has historically been granted status as art, whilst many other dance forms have been categorized as respectively traditional, cultural, ritual, social, museal, commercial, folkloric etc, without a problematization of the often-reductive use of these terms.
Today, contemporary dance dominates access to formal dance education, art funding as well as networks of dissemination and distribution in the Nordics. Other dance forms are often met with a denial of coeavalness by the contemporary dance field, hence largely excluded from the realm of art. Following anthropologist Johannes Fabian, coevalness means to recognize that we all share the same timeframe instead of claiming that some cultures or cultural practices belong to the past whilst others are contemporary – of the now. Swarmy Swarm is an attempt to meet this through the creation of a choreographic structure for a large variety of coeval dances.
The workshop will be held by Ingri Fiksdal in collaboration with dancers Mariama Fatou, Kalley Slåttøy and Jonathan Ibsen. They have previously collaborated on the performances Fictions of the Flesh (2021) and The Syncopators (2022), which have both been approaches towards coeval dance where a starting point has been the history of jazz dance and the personal movement archive of Slåttøy. With Swarmy Swarm, this will be developed further to include a multiplicity of starting points following the different students embodied dance archives.
