Trombone Ensemble Nabou Claerhout

In Europa vind je bijna geen professionele ensembles terug die zich toeleggen op de ontwikkeling van origineel jazzrepertoire voor trombone. Maar wie er ooit mocht van proeven, vergeet zo’n formatie duidelijk niet snel meer.  

Het mag dus niet verbazen dat Nabou dit soort creatie zélf bijzonder hoog op haar bucketlist had staan. Sterker nog: voor de tromboniste geldt het een enorm belangrijk ‘signatuur’-project in haar carrière als jonge muzikant en componist. Dankzij Gent Jazz (en hun award Jong Jazztalent Gent, die Nabou won in 2021) en Rataplan wordt dit ambitieuze project in 2022 werkelijkheid, als een alweer nieuw indrukwekkend hoogtepunt op haar muzikale pad.  

Nabou: “Het repertoire zal bestaan uit eigen composities die ik speciaal voor dit ensemble zal schrijven en arrangeren. Voor mij is het uitwerken van een trombone ensemble dan ook een verderzetting van mijn ambitie om de trombone als instrument meer in de kijker te zetten”.

Creating her own ensemble had been a dream project for Nabou for years, and thanks to Jong Jazztalent Gent and Rataplan, she saw that dream come true in the spring of 2022. While writing the music, she explored the wide-ranging possibilities of the trombone, saying, "The goal is to indulge you with warm, soft, supportive parts and then discover the spicy and hearty character of the trombone." That rhythmic playfulness, which we often hear in Nabou's compositions with her quartet N∆BOU, also subtly permeates the sound of this band. Despite the unusual lineup of five jazz trombonists, each with a different background and sound, the group produces a very homogeneous sound that is full of playfulness and small details.
