Paula Almirón

Paula Almirón is een Argentijnse choreografe en danseres, gevestigd in Brussel. Ze behaalde een Master in Choreografie en Kunst aan de Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten van Brussel (2019). Eerder studeerde ze een Bachelor in Theater aan de Nationale Universiteit van de Kunsten (2007) en het dansprogramma Arte XXI (2007-2008), beide in Buenos Aires.

Haar praktijk bevindt zich op het kruispunt van choreografie, fictief schrijven en geologie, met een focus op de verschillende manieren waarop ruimtes zich manifesteren en de constante interactie tussen het spirituele, het sociale en het geologische. Sinds 2019 onderzoekt ze waterchoreografieën en werkt ze aan een reeks werken die zich ontwikkelen in relatie tot een uitdrogende groep waterlichamen gelegen in het Boliviaanse Andenplateau. Het eerste werk van deze reeks was Always Coming Hole, dat in 2021 in première ging. Sinds 2022 werkt ze aan het tweede hoofdstuk: The River and The Devil, dat in 2024 in première gaat.

Sinds 2021 werkt ze samen met Wouter De Raeve in het project I Build My Language With Rocks (https://hiros.be/en/project/i-build-my-language-with-rocks/), een choreografisch project over de bewegingen van de Noordwijk in Brussel; een kritische lezing van de top-down bewegingen (grootschalige stadsplannen) en een focus op de lokale bewegingen in de wijk. Het idee van het moeras - een van de eerste levensvormen begraven onder het asfalt zodat de stad geschreven kan worden - fungeert als dramaturgische leidraad doorheen het project. In het kader van dit project openden Paula en Wouter in januari 2022 een ruimte genaamd M33 op de benedenverdieping van het Harmoniegebouw, gewijd aan de lokale bewegingen van de wijk. Daarnaast bereiden Wouter en Paula samen een programma voor genaamd Swamp Sacrifices, dat in februari 2024 zal plaatsvinden in Brussel in Kanal – Centre Pompidou, M33 en Radical House.

Het werk van Paula is getoond op verschillende locaties, zoals het Bâtard Festival (Brussel), Veem House for Performance (Amsterdam), Kunsthalle Zürich, Kunsthaus Zürich, Munar Arte (Buenos Aires), Volumes Art Publishing Days (Zürich), Festival FERAL (Brussel), Teatro 25 de Mayo (Buenos Aires), Hamlet Gallery (Zürich), Sala de Belleza (Bogota), en anderen.

Paula Almirón is an Argentinian choreographer and dancer based in Brussels. She obtained a Master's degree in Choreography and Arts at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Brussels (ISAC, 2019). Previously, she studied a BFA in Theatre at the National University of the Arts (2007) and the dance program Arte XXI (2007-2008), both in Buenos Aires.

Her practice unfolds at the intersection of choreography, fictional writing and geology, focusing mostly on the different ways in which spaces perform, and on the constant intra-action between the spiritual, the social and the geological.

Since 2019, she's been investigating water choreographies, working on a series of works that grow in relation to a desertifying group of bodies of water located in the Bolivian Andean plateau. The first work of the series was 'Always Coming Hole', which premiered in 2021. Since 2022, she’s currently working on the second chapter: 'The River and The Devil', to be premiered in 2024.

Since 2021 she collaborates with Wouter De Raeve in the project 'I Build My Language With Rocks', (https://hiros.be/en/project/i-build-my-language-with-rocks/), a choreographic project about the movements of the Northern Quarter in Brussels; a critical reading of the top-down movements (large- scale urban plans), and a focus on the local movements in the neighborhood. The notion of the swamp - one of the first forms of life buried under the asphalt in order for the city to be written - functions as a dramaturgical guidance throughout the project. In the frame of this project, in January 2022, Paula and Wouter opened a space called M33 on the ground floor of the Harmonie building devoted to the local movements of the neighborhood. As well, Wouter and Paula prepare together a program called Swamp Sacrifices, that will take place in Brussels in February 2024 in Kanal – Centre Pompidou, M33 and Radical House.
