JOY BOY is een cinematografische hommage aan de visionaire componist, pianist en activist Julius Eastman (1940–1990). Met zijn compromisloze minimalistische composities en uitgesproken politieke positie als zwarte, homoseksuele kunstenaar groeide Eastman uit tot een van de meest radicale stemmen binnen de hedendaagse muziek. Zijn werk is tegelijk muzikaal vernieuwend, persoonlijk en onverzettelijk.
In vier hoofdstukken, elk geïnspireerd op een van Eastmans composities, verweeft Joy Boy film, performance, choreografie en geluid tot een gelaagde audiovisuele ervaring. Archiefopnames van Eastmans stem verbinden de verschillende delen en brengen zijn ideeën, humor en strijdlust opnieuw tot leven.
De film is gemaakt door een transnationaal collectief van zes filmmakers en kunstenaars, die elk vanuit hun eigen praktijk een antwoord formuleren op Eastmans nalatenschap. Hun uiteenlopende perspectieven vormen samen een rijk en veelstemmig eerbetoon aan een kunstenaar die de grenzen tussen kunst, politiek en identiteit blijvend heeft verlegd.
Joy Boy is een film over verzet en kwetsbaarheid, over collectiviteit en artistieke vrijheid. Een zintuiglijke ervaring die Eastmans radicale erfenis niet alleen herdenkt, maar ook verder laat resoneren.

JOY BOY is a cinematic tribute to the visionary composer, pianist, and activist Julius Eastman (1940–1990). Through his uncompromising minimalist compositions and outspoken political stance as a Black, gay artist, Eastman became one of the most radical voices in contemporary music. His work is at once musically groundbreaking, deeply personal, and defiantly uncompromising.
Structured in four chapters, each inspired by one of Eastman's compositions, JOY BOY weaves together film, performance, choreography, and sound into a layered audiovisual experience. Archival recordings of Eastman's voice connect the different chapters, bringing his ideas, wit, and resilience vividly back to life.
Created by a transnational collective of six filmmakers and artists, the film brings together distinct artistic practices in response to Eastman's legacy. Their diverse perspectives form a rich, polyphonic tribute to an artist who permanently reshaped the relationship between art, politics, and identity.
