In The Last Lamentation staat de zee symbool voor wachten, verlies en afwezigheid. Medda staat stil bij de historische en hedendaagse tragedies, verhalen van exploitatie en kolonialisme, die plaatsvinden in en rond de zee. Met zang en beweging transformeert ze eeuwenoude rouwrituelen tot een actuele, abstracte klaagzang. In haar performance verbindt ze de klaagliederen van Sardinië—haar geboorteplaats—en de Middellandse zee met de tragedies en rituelen van andere kustgemeenschappen, om uiteindelijk een collectief rouwproces te creëren. Haar performance onderzoekt de vloeibaarheid van lichamen en grenzen, en stelt nieuwe vormen van bestaan en verbondenheid voor—als water, als geografie en als herinnering.

The Last Lamentation is a ritual performance inspired by the ancient tradition of professional mourning, connecting Sardinian laments with those of neighboring Mediterranean cultures. Twelve women, backs turned to the audience, weave a hypnotic score of voice and movement—simple, abstract gestures drawn from dance, archaeology, and ethnography.
More than a performance, it is a shared act of mourning: a choral echo of the sea's tragedies and the lives lost to migration. It reflects on absence, memory, and the body—what it leaves behind, how it transforms, and how it might become something new. Through layered voices and breath, grief becomes prayer, and bodies dissolve into a collective, fluid presence across time, space, and species.
Inspired by the specific context of Ostend, an exclusive version of The Last Lamentation is presented with headphones.
