18:30 Clément Janinet Quartet ft. Arve Henriksen 'Garden of Silences'
Met dit nieuwe kwartet – met Arve Henriksen (NO) op trompet, Ambre Villermoz (FR) op accordeon en Robert Lucaciu (DE) op contrabas – zet de Franse violist Clément Janinet de esthetiek van zijn eerdere projecten zoals Ornette Under the Repetitive Skies en La Litanie des Cimes voort, maar opent tegelijk de deuren voor dialoog tussen muzikanten uit verschillende culturen.
Centraal staat een onderzoek naar de raakvlakken tussen vrije improvisatie en klassieke of populaire repetitieve muziek. De formule, waarin de viool in dialoog gaat met trompet, accordeon en contrabas, bevrijdt zich van de grenzen van repertoire en stijl. Zo ontmoeten Carlo Gesualdo en John Dowland de Zweedse nyckelharpa, felle improvisaties wisselen af met microtonale klankvelden, hedendaagse kamermuziek vloeit over in volksdansen en liederen uit orale tradities.
Het album Garden of Silences van het Clément Janinet Quartet met als special guest Arve Henriksen, werd eerder deze zomer opgenomen voor het Hongaarse BMC Records. Op Jazz Brugge krijg je als één van de eersten deze muziek live te zien.
19:45 Benjamin Sauzereau & REMORQUE
De Brusselse gitarist Benjamin Sauzereau is een van de meest gerespecteerde muzikanten van de Belgische jazz en is actief over het volledige spectrum, van elegante jazz tot pittige improvisatie. Je kan hem kennen van o.m. Les Chroniques de l’Inutile, Hendrik Lasure warm bad, Book of Air en Fur. Hij schreef recent een groot aantal composities die hij presenteert onder de noemer REMORQUE, met verschillende line-ups. Een beetje zoals John Zorn met zijn Masada-composities.
Wat ze gemeen hebben, is een vernuftige exploratie van compositie, improvisatie en arrangement. Het gaat doorgaans om korte, maar levendige stukken muziek met een weelde van kleuren en sferen. Nu eens lyrisch en bedachtzaam, dan weer frivool, speels of een beetje stekelig. Eind vorig jaar verscheen een eerste reeks composities onder de toepasselijke titel Un bij het Brugse label W.E.R.F. records. Net op de valreep voor Jazz Brugge komt ook het vervolg Deux uit. Het gezelschap dat deze wonderschone muziek uitvoert bestaat naast Benjamin zelf celliste Annemie Osborne, violiste Amèle Metlini en Vitja Pauwels op gitaar en pedal steel.

19:45 No Tongues ft. Linda Oláh & Elsa Corre
Het Franse gezelschap No Tongues creëert dankzij hun mix van akoestische en elektronische elementen een volledig nieuw en uniek geluid. Muzikaal halen ze hun inspiratie uit liederen uit oude Europese culturen. Voor hun meest recente project - Ici - waarmee ze op Jazz Brugge aantreden, laten ze zich bijstaan door de stemmen van twee uitzonderlijke zangeressen: Linda Oláh en Elsa Corre.
Het getik van regen op een dakraam, het gepiep van een speelgoedtelefoon, het zachte kraken van een hete oven, de polyritmische druppels van een natte trui: alledaagse geluiden worden op radicale maar poëtische wijze omgevormd tot muzikaal materiaal. De basklarinet verandert in een drum, de trompet klinkt als een modulaire synthesizer en de contrabas transformeert tot een drumstel zonder dat je het als luisteraar goed en wel door hebt. Intussen ben je helemaal in de ban van de trance die dit gezelschap over je laat neerdalen.
21:00 Craig Taborn - Tomeka Reid - Ches Smith
Pianist Craig Taborn mag vandaag gerust één van de groten der aarde worden genoemd. Zowel als componist als pianist wordt hij geroemd over de hele wereld. Zo mag hij John Zorn tot één van zijn grootste fans rekenen. Zorn bracht diverse platen uit van en met Craig op zijn label Tzadik. Vandaag mag Craig Taborn zich ook trots ECM artiest noemen. Met zijn ECM album Shadowplays kon je hem tijdens AMOK festival in 2022 nog aan het werk zien in de Brugse Walburgakerk.
In 2018 schreef Craig een compleet nieuw oeuvre met composities die de grenzen aftasten van hedendaagse kamermuziek, improvisatie/jazz en rootsmuziek uit Afrika en het Caribisch gebied. Deze gelaagde muziek vereiste een instrumentatie die soepel door de snelle verschuivingen kon navigeren. Om deze muziek succesvol tot leven te brengen, lijfde hij celliste Tomeika Reid en drummer Ches Smith in en een nieuw trio werd geboren.
Door gebruik te maken van Tomeka Reid’s beheersing als celliste en improvisatrice, Ches Smith’s veelzijdigheid als drummer en percussionst en Taborn’s benaderingen van piano en synths, beweegt de muziek zich behendig van fijn vervaardigde kamermuziek-miniaturen naar energieke uitspattingen. De belangrijkste invloeden van de groep omvatten de kosmische free jazz van Sun Ra, de West-Afrikaanse elektrische orgelmuziek van Mamman Sani, de wereldse jazz fusion van Don Cherry en Art Ensemble of Chicago en de tegendraadse elektro van Detroit techno pioniers Drexciya.

18:30 Clément Janinet Quartet ft. Arve Henriksen 'Garden of Silences'
With this new quartet - featuring Norwegian trumpeter Arve Henriksen, French accordionist Ambre Villermoz, and German double bassist Robert Lucaciu - French violinist Clément Janinet continues the aesthetic direction of earlier projects like Ornette Under the Repetitive Skies and La Litanie des Cimes. Yet, he now opens the doors to a rich dialogue between musicians from different cultural backgrounds.
At the heart of the project lies an exploration of the intersection between free improvisation and classical or popular repetitive music. The combination of violin, trumpet, accordion, and double bass transcends the boundaries of genre and repertoire. In this unique format, Carlo Gesualdo and John Dowland meet the Swedish nyckelharpa, fiery improvisations give way to microtonal soundscapes, and contemporary chamber music flows into folk dances and oral tradition songs.
The quartet's album Garden of Silences, featuring Arve Henriksen as a special guest, was recorded earlier this summer for Hungary’s BMC Records. At Jazz Brugge, audiences will be among the first to experience this music live.

Brussels-based guitarist Benjamin Sauzereau is one of the most respected musicians in Belgian jazz, active across the full spectrum—from elegant jazz to fiery improvisation. You might know him from Les Chroniques de l’Inutile, Hendrik Lasure warm bad, Book of Air, and Fur. He recently wrote a large set of compositions presented under the banner REMORQUE, with various line-ups—similar to John Zorn’s Masada compositions.
These works are united by their clever exploration of composition, improvisation, and arrangement. The pieces tend to be short but vivid, bursting with color and atmosphere—at times lyrical and contemplative, at others playful, whimsical, or slightly prickly. The first volume, Un, was released late last year on the Bruges-based label W.E.R.F. records. Just in time for Jazz Brugge, the follow-up Deux will be released.
Joining Benjamin to perform this exquisite music are cellist Annemie Osborne, violinist Amèle Metlini, and Vitja Pauwels on guitar and pedal steel.

The French ensemble No Tongues creates an entirely new and unique sound by blending acoustic and electronic elements. Their musical inspiration comes from songs of ancient European cultures. For their latest project Ici, which they’re presenting at Jazz Brugge, they’re joined by two extraordinary vocalists: Linda Oláh and Elsa Corre.
The patter of rain on a skylight, the squeak of a toy phone, the soft crackle of a hot oven, the polyrhythmic drip of a wet sweater—everyday sounds are transformed, radically yet poetically, into musical material. A bass clarinet becomes a drum, a trumpet sounds like a modular synth, and a double bass morphs into a drum kit—often without the listener even realizing. All the while, the group draws the audience into a trance-like sonic spell.
21:00 Craig Taborn – Tomeka Reid – Ches Smith
Pianist Craig Taborn can rightfully be called one of the leading figures in contemporary music today. As both composer and pianist, he is internationally acclaimed—and none other than John Zorn counts himself a devoted fan, having released several of Taborn’s albums on his Tzadik label. Today, Taborn is also proudly part of the prestigious ECM Records roster. You may have seen him perform his ECM album Shadowplays at Bruges’ Walburga Church during the AMOK Festival in 2022.
In 2018, Taborn composed a completely new body of work that probes the boundaries between contemporary chamber music, jazz improvisation, and roots music from Africa and the Caribbean. This layered music required an ensemble capable of navigating rapid stylistic shifts. To realize this, he enlisted cellist Tomeka Reid and drummer Ches Smith, forming a powerful new trio.
With Reid’s mastery of both cello and improvisation, Smith’s versatility on drums and percussion, and Taborn’s approach to piano and synths, the music moves fluidly from finely crafted chamber miniatures to bursts of high energy. Their key influences include the cosmic free jazz of Sun Ra, the electric organ music of West Africa’s Mamman Sani, the worldly fusion of Don Cherry and Art Ensemble of Chicago, and the edgy electronics of Detroit techno pioneers Drexciya.
