Peter Somuah groeide op in Accra, de hoofdstad van Ghana. Muziek werd hem als kind met de paplepel ingegeven en al op jonge leeftijd werd duidelijk dat zijn levenspad zich verder in de muzikale richting zou ontwikkelen. Als autodidactische trompettist en componist leerde hij zichzelf trompet aan door eindeloos te luisteren naar helden als Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard en Roy Hargrove.
Op zijn veertiende speelde hij in een marchingband highlife en afrobeat in Accra, twee typische Ghanese muziekstijlen. Na tournees door China en Europa vestigde hij zich in Rotterdam en begon hij zijn studies aan het Rotterdams Conservatorium.In 2021 ontving hij in Nederland de Erasmus Jazz Award voor jong jazztalent, gevolgd door de Edison Jazz Award in 2022 voor zijn debuutalbum Outer Space.
Op zijn tweede en meest recente album Highlife - dat verscheen op het vooraanstaande Duitse jazzlabel ACT - brengt hij hulde aan de muziek van zijn thuisland en keert hij terug naar zijn roots. Virtuositeit en groove gaan hand in hand. Stilzitten is geen optie.

Peter Somuah grew up in Accra, the capital of Ghana. Music was instilled in him from an early age, and it quickly became clear that his life path would continue in a musical direction. As a self-taught trumpeter and composer, he taught himself to play the trumpet by endlessly listening to heroes like Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard, and Roy Hargrove.
At the age of fourteen, he was already playing highlife and afrobeat — two quintessential Ghanaian music styles — in a marching band in Accra. After touring through China and Europe, he settled in Rotterdam and began his studies at the Rotterdam Conservatory. In 2021, he received the Erasmus Jazz Award for young jazz talent in the Netherlands, followed by the Edison Jazz Award in 2022 for his debut album Outer Space.
On his second and most recent album Highlife — released on the renowned German jazz label ACT — he pays tribute to the music of his homeland and returns to his roots. Virtuosity and groove go hand in hand. Sitting still is not an option.
