Micha Volders

Micha Volders is muzikant, producer, beeldmaker en docent aan PXL Music. Vanuit een achtergrond in de undergroundscene ontwikkelde hij een hybride praktijk waarin muziek, film en performance voortdurend in elkaar overvloeien. Hij behaalde een master in Animatiefilm aan RITCS en opereert sindsdien consequent buiten de klassieke formats van zowel cinema als muziek.
Volders begon als bassist in lokale bands en werd in 1996 drummer van El Guapo Stuntteam, waarmee hij jarenlang door Europese punkclubs toerde. Na het uiteenvallen van de band richtte hij samen met Lotte Vanhamel het experimentele project Vermin Twins op, een surrealistisch universum dat laveert tussen noise, elektronica, performance en fictie, met releases als Exoskeleton (2010), Bare Bones / Spiritus (2021) en PoP (2022). Hij speelde daarnaast bas bij het mysterieuze collectief Chrome Brulée en vormt samen met Dijf Sanders het project GameboyzIImen, waarbij live elektronische muziek uitsluitend op twee Game Boys wordt uitgevoerd.
Met Meteor Musik en Jaak De Digitale creëerde hij in 2019 EON: een immersieve audiovisuele 360°-voorstelling voor Europese planetaria. De groep bracht daarnaast werk van componist Jean Hoyoux opnieuw tot leven in een hedendaagse context. 
Als producer en recording engineer werkte Volders voor uiteenlopende artiesten en bands, waaronder Gruppo Di Pawlowski, Whispering Sons en The Germans. Zijn productiewerk balanceert tussen rauwheid en precisie, met een sterke focus op fysieke aanwezigheid, frictie en textuur.
In 2020 richtte hij Mutropia op: een platform voor experimentele muziek op vinyl, gekenmerkt door duurzame en eigenzinnige edities waarin geluid, object en beeld als één geheel worden benaderd. Via Mutropia verschijnen zowel zijn eigen projecten als samenwerkingen.
In 2023 werkte hij samen met Miet Warlop aan ICCHĀ, een intense performance gerealiseerd in de straten van Dhaka met lokale studenten. Recent verzorgde hij ook de muzikale productie van It Never SssT van diezelfde Warlop voor het Belgische paviljoen op de 61st Venice Biennale. In 2024 regisseerde hij zijn eerste kortfilm, SǒN, waarvoor hij eveneens de soundtrack componeerde en uitbracht via Mutropia.

Volders beweegt zich bewust aan de marge, een plek waar hij compromisloos kan experimenteren zonder zich aan een vast patroon of format te binden. Zijn werk ontstaat vanuit een constante zoektocht naar nieuwe werelden, waarin geluid en beeld niet illustratief naast elkaar bestaan, maar samensmelten tot één fysieke ervaring.

Micha Volders is a musician, producer, visual artist and lecturer at PXL Music. Coming from an underground background, he developed a hybrid practice in which music, film and performance constantly flow into one another. He holds a master's degree in Animation Film from RITCS and has since operated consistently outside the conventional formats of both cinema and music.

Volders started out as a bassist in local bands and in 1996 became the drummer of El Guapo Stuntteam, with whom he toured European punk clubs for many years. After the band dissolved, he co-founded the experimental project Vermin Twins together with Lotte Vanhamel — a surrealist universe navigating between noise, electronics, performance and fiction, with releases including Exoskeleton (2010), Bare Bones / Spiritus (2021) and PoP (2022). He also played bass in the mysterious collective Chrome Brulée and forms, together with Dijf Sanders, the project GameboyzIImen, performing live electronic music exclusively on two Game Boys. With Meteor Musik and Jaak De Digitale, he created EON in 2019: an immersive audiovisual 360° show for European planetariums. The group also brought the work of composer Jean Hoyoux back to life in a contemporary context.

As a producer and recording engineer, Volders has worked with a wide range of artists and bands, including Gruppo Di Pawlowski, Whispering Sons and The Germans. His production work balances rawness and precision, with a strong focus on physical presence, friction and texture. In 2020 he founded Mutropia: a platform for experimental music on vinyl, characterised by sustainable and idiosyncratic editions in which sound, object and image are approached as a single whole. Both his own projects and collaborations are released through Mutropia.

In 2023 he collaborated with Miet Warlop on ICCHĀ, an intense performance realised in the streets of Dhaka with local students. He recently also handled the musical production of It Never SssT by the same Warlop for the Belgian pavilion at the 61st Venice Biennale. In 2024 he directed his first short film, SǒN, for which he also composed the soundtrack, released through Mutropia.

Volders deliberately operates at the margins — a place where he can experiment without compromise, free from fixed patterns or formats. His work emerges from a constant search for new worlds, in which sound and image do not exist illustratively side by side, but merge into a single physical experience.
