Oshin Albrecht en Melissa Mabesoone richtten in 2012 het collectief 'buren' op. De term ‘buren’ vonden ze in Heideiggers essaybundel ‘Bauen, Wohen, Denken’ waarin ‘buren’ samenvalt met ‘bouwen’ en ‘bewonen’. Voor Melissa en Oshin functioneert het als zelfstandig naamwoord en als werkwoord; als overkoepelende term voor hun praktijk en als modus operandi. Hun werk verhoudt zich zowel fysiek als inhoudelijk actief tot een omgeving: site-specific, black-box of white cube.

Via performance, video, tekst, objecten, fotografie en installatie navigeren ze door thema’s als gemeenschap, huiselijkheid, gender, (kunst)geschiedenis en neoliberale fantasieën. Deze onderwerpen worden benaderd met een gevoel voor humor en een toekomstgerichte verbeelding. buren stelt de- en reconstructie van beeld en taal centraal. De scène benaderen ze als een kritische speeltuin, een oppervlak waarop ze continu herspelen, ze installeren een gevoel van vertrouwdheid die ze geleidelijk aan vervormen. Hun werk heeft een sterk visueel karakter met bijzondere aandacht voor de muzikaliteit van tekst en voor de manier waarop geluid en muziek als communicatief middel functioneert.

Na de performances buren by buren (2013) en Have you rearranged the flowers? (2014) maakte buren o.a. hun eerste film Parkways tijdens de BijlmAir-residentie in Amsterdam. Van 2020 tot en met 2024 maakt buren deel uit van het Europese Netwerk Apap - Feminist Futures via Buda. In 2021 ging hun performance SPARE TIME WORK in première. Een voorstelling waarin reproductieve arbeid, klasse, volwassenheid en groei op muzikale wijze zal worden bespeeld.

Oshin Albrecht and Melissa Mabesoone founded the collective 'buren' in 2012. They found the term 'buren' in Heideigger's collection of essays 'Bauen, Wohen, Denken' in which 'buren' coincides with 'build' and 'inhabit'. For Melissa and Oshin, it functions as a noun and a verb; as an umbrella term for their practice and as a modus operandi. Their work actively relates both physically and substantively to an environment: site-specific, black-box or white cube.

Through performance, video, text, objects, photography and installation, they navigate themes of community, domesticity, gender, (art) history and neoliberal fantasies. They approach these topics with a sense of humour and a forward-facing imagination. buren puts de- and reconstruction of image and language at the centre. They approach the scene as a critical playground, a surface on which they continuously hit replay, installing a sense of familiarity that they gradually distort. Their work has a strong visual character with a particular focus on the musicality of text and how sound and music function as communicative tools.

After the performances buren by buren (2013) and Have you rearranged the flowers? (2014), buren made, among others, their first film Parkways during the BijlmAir residence in Amsterdam. From 2020 to 2024, neighbours will be part of the European Network Apap - Feminist Futures via Buda. In 2021, their performance SPARE TIME WORK premièred.  A performance in which reproductive labour, class, maturity and growth will be played musically.
